Everybody loves Game of Thrones as it is the most popular TV show of the day. There are gorgeous women, handsome men, action-packed battle scenes, ingenious political schemes, war and strategies, realistic CGI, dragons, direwolves and hot women. Okay, we said hot women twice, because the show is filled with them. GOT is really great and we could say nothing bad about it, but if you were able to read the books then you surely have noticed all the differences. George R.R. Martin is infamous for writing at a snail’s pace and that’s why the show had to deviate from the books and start its own storyline but the thing is, the show killed a lot of characters that are still alive in the books. And we mean “A lot.” Surely they had their reasons, but whatever it is, we can never forgive them for killing all of our favorite characters. We still can’t stop watching, though.
Catelyn Stark
In the books, Catelyn Stark was also killed just like in the show. So you might be thinking, “then why is she on a list about characters that are still alive in the books” well, that’s because she is. Well, technically she was revived. After a few days of floating in the river, the Brotherhood Without Banners found her floating body and Thoros of Myr (the priest with a burning sword and a man-bun) revived her with the help of the Lord of Light. In order to revive Catelyn, Beric Dondarion (the guy with the burning sword and the eye-patch) had to give his life, and this time he wasn’t coming back. Catelyn now goes by the name Lady Stoneheart and is bent on exacting revenge on everyone who is connected to the Red Wedding, the Freys, the Boltons, and the Lannisters. And we mean, “EVERYONE.” She is a major part of the books, so it would have been awesome to see her on screen, but the time to make her appearance has already passed.
Shireen Baratheon & Stannis Baratheon
In the show that is all about death and betrayal, the death of Shireen Baratheon, the daughter of Stannis Baratheon, is the most disturbing one of all. And that’s saying a lot. Shireen was burned alive at the pyre as an offering for R’hllor, the Lord of Light, in order to lift a heavy snowstorm. What’s most disturbing and sickening about this scene was that Stannis allowed for her daughter to be burned alive and that’s just an episode after the heart-warming scene between the father and daughter. The snowstorm was lifted thanks to the offering but due to the disgusting scene, half of Stannis’ army deserted which is why they were defeated. He was killed by Brienne of Tarth to avenge Renly’s death (Stannis’ little brother that he had killed). In the books, Shireen and her mother Selyse is safe at Castle Black, while Stannis is also still alive in the books and is only about to confront the Bolton Army.
Tommen Baratheon & Myrcella Baratheon
In the show, Myrcella was poisoned by the Dornish, specifically Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes, as a part of revenge for the death of Oberyn Martell. Tommen, on the other hand, jumped from a window when he saw his wife and everyone else at the Sept died when it was blown up with wildfire. In the books, however, Tommen and Myrcella are both alive. Tommen still sits on the Iron Throne, and Myrcella was injured and lost an ear due to a Dornish plot to make her the Queen of Westeros sitting on the Iron Throne.
Margaery Tyrell
Margaery Tyrell is one of the most beautiful women on the show, so it was a shame when she died when the Great Sept of Baelor was blown up with wildfire due to Cersei’s plans. Margaery died, along with her family and a lot of other characters, and the only one left in the house Tyrell is the Queen of Thorns, Olenna Tyrell. In the books, the Tyrells are all alive and well, with even more characters from House Tyrell that weren’t included in the show.
Hodor
Of all deaths from the show, no one hit us as hard as when the gentle giant Hodor died sacrificing his life for Bran. Hodor sacrificed himself in order for Bran and Meera to escape, and in the episode, we were able to find out more about Hodor’s past with the fact that he was destined to sacrifice his life in order for Bran to live! In the books, Hodor is still alive but the George R.R. Martin was the one who told the producers about Hodor’s past so it seems that there will be something bad happening to Hodor in books too. We still hope that Hodor survives, though!
